"Westbury on Severn`s Red Lion Inn is everything a traditional English country pub should be, but with a superb menu which would not look amiss in a top city restaurant. Here you will find true character, nooks and crannies,
real fires and beams by the dozen.

'Twas a last-minute decision to go out for a meal and since I had recently been into the Red Lion and seen its extensive menu, we decided to go there. That said, there are no menus to peruse at your table. Instead, the wide array of dishes, which change regularly, are listed on three blackboards around the bar.

The 17th Century pub has a lovely warm atmosphere and we soon made ourselves at home as drinks in hand, we tried to decide from the boards what we would like to eat.

Having to peer around other customers to see the lower items on the lists could have been annoying, but they obligingly moved a little so that we could see more easily.

That's the kind of friendly welcoming establishment chef and owner John Bolton has encouraged in the four years he has been at the Red Lion.

He prides himself on the quality of all the dishes he produces, more than one of which is cooked at the table in the proper manner.

mouthwatering food
our rating
From a menu that included steak diane, liver and bacon, beef stroganoff, fisherman's crumble and moules mariniere, herself chose trout amandine, which she described as exquisite, served with new potatoes and vegetables.

I, always averse to the myriad bones, went for traditional home-made faggots, served with peas and chips just as they should be.

What a delight. The faggots were full of flavour, and the unusually light gravy a perfect foil giving a wonderful combination of taste.

Everything was piping hot and perfectly served by Kayleigh, who returned to make sure all was well soon after serving us each course.

For dessert, we chose hot apple pie and custard, and rhubarb and apple crumble and custard, both of which were again delicious.

HAPPY TO SERVE YOU, Kayleigh Higgins
very affordable prices

John, who has worked in some of the top restaurants in the country, said: "I source all the best ingredients fresh from the local area where I can - and I believe that if you are going to do something, do it properly.

"That's why we always cook the steak diane and the crepes suzette at the table.

"You don't get the full flavour unless things are done as they should be."

As well as the main meals, there are smaller light bites or starters, including Thai fish cakes, duck liver pate and whitebait, and there are also ciabattas on offer with steak, chicken and mayonnaise or prawn fillings.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, John offers steak specials of two rumps for the price of one, including a bottle of the house wine, for just £14. We will certainly be back again in the future. "
